Enclosure No. 8 to Despatch No. 354 of the 14th June, 1902.
330
Public Works Office, Hong Kong, 24th May, 1902.
I have the honour to request that supplementary provision may be obtained in aid of the following Annually Recurrent Votes to the extent stated:-
(1) Maintenance of Waterworks, City & Hill District. $48,000 (2) Maintenance of Roads and Bridges in the City. $25,000 (3) Waterworks Miscellaneous. $15,500 (4) Drainage Works Miscellaneous. $23,000 (5) Forming and Kerbing Streets. $20,000THE HONOURABLE
With regard to (1), the necessity for the supplementary provision has arisen principally out of the recent severe drought, on account of which extensive measures were adopted for supplementing the supply obtainable from the ordinary sources.
With regard to (2 & 3), great complaints were made during last year as to the condition of the roads and the Commission which recently enquired into the working of the Public Works Department urged the necessity of every attempt being made to bring them into a state creditable to the Colony.
